MoD rules out buying American F-35 fighter jets
Defense Minister Nuno Melo, who's also the leader of the right-wing CDS, said to be considering European alternatives

In a strategic shift for Portugal, Defense Minister Nuno Melo has ruled out the purchase of American F-35 fighter jets, produced by Lockheed Martin, to replace its aging fleet of F-16s, opting instead to explore European alternatives.
Minister Melo emphasized the need for greater operational security and economic benefits for Portugal, highlighting that “the world has changed.”
As the Portuguese Air Force's F-16 aircraft near the end of their service life, Melo stressed the importance of choosing options that offer predictability and reliability.
He pointed to the evolving geopolitical landscape and the United States’ recent stance within NATO as key factors influencing Portugal's decision.
“The F-16s are at the end of their cycle, and we must consider their replacement. However, we cannot ignore the geopolitical context. The recent position of the United States within NATO and the international geostrategic framework compels us to reflect on the best options, as the predictability of our allies is paramount,” Melo stated.
Melo hinted at the possibility of selecting European-made aircraft, which could provide economic benefits to Portugal.
Though he did not specify which models are under consideration, speculation suggests that the French Dassault Rafale could be among the contenders.
“There are several options to consider, particularly within the context of European production, and the potential economic return for Portugal is significant,” he added.
“The world has changed, and the once predictable nature of our U.S. ally could present limitations in terms of usage, maintenance, components, and overall operational assurance.”
In addition to discussing the aircraft replacement, Melo acknowledged the potential deployment of Portuguese military personnel to Ukraine.
However, he clarified that such involvement would only occur within a ceasefire and peacekeeping mission framework.
These statements reflect Portugal’s strategic reassessment of its alliances and military acquisitions amid a rapidly changing international landscape.
Who wants the risks of buying american defence stuff with that leadership changing their minds every hour…
Buy european is a safer alternative!
I can't blame them for balking on the F-35 as long as Trump is alive (let's hope that's a short term prospect). It's an amazing aircraft system, but there are alternatives. Sad that Trump is set on destroying a nearly 80-year old alliance, and souring the Portugal-US relationship in the process.
