I have a reader nerd question: could you recommend a (short) book list in English, Portuguese, or bilingual of works by Camoes? I was really moved by the poem and its translation by Richard Zenith in your post. Thank you so so much!
Hi, The Lusiads is Camões’ masterpiece, but it can be quite dense and lengthy as a first introduction to his work (in fact, many Portuguese haven’t read it). I’d recommend starting with the bilingual book Luís de Camões: A Global Poet for Today, which offers a curated selection of his lyric poetry along with key excerpts from The Lusiads. It’s available at the Navy Museum in Lisbon, and also online here:
