Is it possible to assess integrity purely by evaluating physical appearance and mien? I think so. And Ventura just radiates sleaze.

Chega has many stances on different issues that resonate with different Portuguese people. It’d be wrong to assume that voters choose them solely based on immigration policy. However, their stance on immigration—favoring it from Europe, Western countries, and Portuguese-speaking countries—is broadly popular. Most Portuguese who went abroad did it for financial reasons, retaining their citizenship, and also went to European/Western/Lusophone countries. That’s very different from mass third-world movements to Portugal of people who have zero connection to the country.

It defies logic. The mindset of “they’re not talking about me. I’m a good immigrant. They’re focusing on the bad ones.” is prevalent in their attempts to justify it to themselves.

I wouldn’t assume the mindset of voters. Chega is broadly popular across different groups and regions. I did not vote for them, but I too as an immigrant would prefer people who adapt to the existing society, and not having mass migration of millions of people from unrelated countries.

Thanks - good to be introduced to Disa - I take it you know this to be a reputable news resource?

I was more asking Diogo for a possible story on it with his awesome reportorial chops - as a former reporter myself, I appreciate details being verified.

Hi, yes, I believe Rebecca posted a similar comment last week about disinformation. I replied then that researchers from ISCTE’s Media Lab, which is working with the Portuguese Election Commission on this, have challenged this particular Cyabra report. You can read an analysis in English by one of the researchers (whom I happen to know) here: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/ineswnarciso_investiga%C3%A7%C3%A3o-s%C3%A3o-falsas-58-das-contas-no-activity-7330660945293164544-yAbY/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_ios&rcm=ACoAACstuTcB7RBVU-b7t7DCchoPJ755POQzbTc.

More broadly, the debate has focused on the relationship between Chega and the traditional media, particularly regarding airtime on national television. The Guardian highlighted this yesterday, quoting two well-established Portuguese political scientists on the issue: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/may/29/nothing-will-be-the-same-again-portugals-chega-may-be-spot-on. Regarding this issue, it's worth noting that the main Portuguese media companies have been struggling recently. Impresa, which owns SIC and Expresso, ended 2024 with a net loss of €66.2 million and might be sold in the near future..
