Portugal's 4 medals mark its best Olympic showing ever
Now that the games have come to an end, it's time to take stock of Portugal's participation.
In the end, the Portuguese Olympic mission wrote history and guided the country to its best ever participation in the Olympic Games.
Portugal's medal haul was inaugurated by PatrÃcia Sampaio in judo, in the up to 78kg weight category. The Portuguese athlete won bronze after defeating Japanese judoka Rika Takayama with an ippon.
One of the silver medals was won by Pedro Pichardo in the triple jump. The 30-year-old athlete wasn't in the best shape and had physical difficulties, but he still managed a mark of 17m84, just two centimetres off the top spot.
The surprise came in track cycling, with silver and gold medals.
In his Olympic debut, Iúri Leitão won his first silver medal in the omnium at the Saint-Quentin-en-Yveniles velodrome.
Gold came in the same discipline, but in pairs and in the madison category, with Iúri Leitão paired with Rui Oliveira, who made his track cycling debut. This is the first time that Portugal has won gold in a sport other than athletics.
The Portuguese mission also collected 14 Olympic diplomas, which means that 14 athletes finished in the top eight. Check out here all the figures:
