New coin celebrates legendary punk-rock band "Xutos e Pontapés"
30 renowned Portuguese artists also performed a new version of "À Minha Maneira", one of the band's biggest hits.
On Wednesday, the Bank of Portugal launched a new collector;s coin, worth five euros, dedicated to iconic punk-rock band Xutos & Pontapés, as part of the ‘Portuguese Musicians’ series.
On one side of the coin, designed by guitarist Tó Trips, you can see an X made with the arms, as the band's fans usually do during concerts.
On the other side, it’s written ‘Xutos & Pontapés’ and ‘Rock “n” Roll since 1979’ and the letter ‘X’, which is the band's symbol.
The series dedicated to Portuguese musicians began last year with a coin dedicated to José Afonso.
The official birth of Xutos & Pontapés took place 45 years ago, on 13 January 1979, at the Alunos de Apolo ballroom in Lisbon, on a night when they played four songs in just over five minutes.
At the time, the group, which came to be called Delirium Tremens and then Beijinhos e Parabéns, was made up of youngsters Zé Pedro, Kalú, Tim and Zé Leonel, influenced by the punk rock that was entering the foreign music scene in force.
The new coins will be distributed throughout banks and other credit institutions and Banco de Portugal treasury offices, as well as in Imprensa Nacional - Casa da Moeda shops.

Also this week, 30 renowned Portuguese artists came together to performe a new version of ‘À Minha Maneira’, one of the band's biggest hits.

The participating artists include names from various generations and musical genres, such as Carolina Deslandes, Bárbara Tinoco, Rui Veloso, Pedro Abrunhosa, Carlão, Carminho, Marisa Liz, Tatanka and Ana Bacalhau.
This unique collaboration revisits the 1988 classic, bringing new interpretations and emotions to the iconic theme.
The tribute video, which has already gone viral on social media, was made in collaboration with Xutos & Pontapés' family and fans.
It shows personal objects with a strong connection to the band, such as the sofa belonging to the late guitarist Zé Pedro and a sofa belonging to the grandmother of Kalu, the band's drummer.
